LGBTQ Wellness
As the first LGBTQ Wellness Center in Alabama, it is our goal to provide a warm, safe, and caring environment where LGBTQ individuals feel accepted in a judgment-free zone. It is important for LGBTQ individuals to have a primary care physician who they feel comfortable with and can ask honest questions about their health and well being.
According to the U.S. Gay & Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA), besides HIV/AIDS, issues related to LGBTQ health include breast and cervical cancer, hepatitis, mental health, substance abuse, tobacco use, depression, access to care for transgender persons, issues surrounding marriage and family recognition, conversion therapy, and refusal clause legislation, and laws that are intended to "immunize health care professionals from liability for discriminating against persons of whom they disapprove".
Studies show that LGBTQ people experience health issues and barriers related to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity or expression. Many avoid or delay care or receive inappropriate or inferior care because of perceived or real homophobia or transphobia, and discrimination by health care providers and institutions.
MCWC relieves our community of barriers to healthcare for LGBTQ individuals. Contact MCWC today and help us make Birmingham a healthier city for ALL.
